Thank you, Dr. King!

Today I rode in the third seat of the mini-van in between Tyce and Mary.

Me: So kids, if Martin Luther King were still alive and you got to meet him, what would you say?

Tyce: I'd say, "Hi. You were very courageous."

Mary: I'd say, "Thank you for all you did, because if it weren't for you then Sara and I wouldn't be friends."

Wow. What a very personal reality for Mary. So neat that she recognizes progress at such a young age. And what a great question to ask your kids!

I've been thinking about Mary's comment for days now. I think that this is one of the most profound, tragic comments I've ever heard about race relations. How could the human race hate each other enough to keep children away from their friends? And it happens all the time - that horrible, ugly side of our nature. That's what is so miraculous about the Civil Rights movement. Somehow, hearts and minds really did change.

That's one thing about Mary--she frequently gives me food for thought. I've been thinking about what she said too.
